Wildfire Prevention: Is Your Home Firewise?

Wildfires can cause major environmental, social and economic damages. The loss of timber, wildlife habitat, homes and even lives may result from a devastating wildfire. The wildfire that does not start is the one that does not have to be fought.
Prevention is the key in helping to reduce the number of human caused fires- one of the most important goals for the Florida Forest Service. Even though Florida is the lightning capital of the world, arson and escaped debris burning are still the two main causes of wildfires in Florida.
Florida’s fire dependent ecosystems and year round fire season pose a challenge to wildland fire fighters in their attempt to continually educate Floridians and visitors about wildfire danger in Florida.
The Florida Forest Service has several education and mitigation programs aimed at reducing all types of human caused fire.
Over the past 50 years, more and more Floridians have moved out of our cities to build homes and businesses in outlying fringe areas known as the wildland/urban interface (WUI). In fact, almost one-third of our population now lives in interface areas where structures intermingle with forests and wildlands. Residents here, however, usually don't realize they may live too "close to nature" and they may, in fact, be living on the edge of a wildfire disaster.
On average, Florida experiences the second highest number of wildfires in the nation. During dry years, Florida experiences severe wildfires — wildfires that destroy homes, disrupt people's lives and impact our economy.
Is Your Home Firewise?
Much of what is known about protecting homes from wildland fire is based upon the work of Jack Cohen, a Fire Research Scientist at the U.S. Forest Service Fire Lab in Missoula, Montana. Cohen has been studying wildfires for almost 30 years. His research and field investigations support some interesting explanations for home losses associated with wildland/urban interface fires. Cohen has found that most wildland/urban interface homes are lost because of ignitions associated with the two most vulnerable parts of a home:
1. The roof
2. The area immediately surrounding the structure
Cohen's research results indicate that home ignitions usually occur over relatively short distances — tens of yards, not hundreds of feet from little things associated with either:
• Fire brands landing on and around the structure, or
• Flames from slow-moving, low-intensity surface fires contacting flammable portions of the structure.
This means that the homeowner can play a significant role in reducing home losses from wildfires by reducing fuels and through careful landscaping in what Cohen calls the "home ignition zone," an area that extends outward from the home 100 to 200 feet in all directions.
Research has shown that the home ignition zone principally determines the potential for home ignitions during severe wildfires.
Case studies indicate that the most critical area is a zone of "defensible space" within 30 feet of the structure.
Maintaining a lean, clean and green* landscape within 30 feet of a structure can make a significant difference in whether it survives a wildfire. The important thing is that action must be taken before wildfire threatens.
• Lean — small amounts of flammable vegetation
• Clean — no accumulations of dead vegetation
• Green — plants are healthy and green; lawn is well irrigated
Reducing fuel within the defensible space means creating a landscape that breaks up the continuity of brush and other vegetation that could bring wildfire in contact with any flammable portion of the structure.
This may involve:
• Eliminating any flammable vegetation in contact with the structure
• Thinning out trees and shrubs so there is 10 to 15 feet between the tree crowns
• Pruning tree limbs to a height of 6 to 10 feet
• Replacing highly flammable landscape material with plant materials having a higher water content
• Replacing flammable mulch adjacent to the structure with gravel
or rock
•Eliminating "ladder fuels" near the structure that might carry a surface fire to the roof or eaves
Fire is a natural part of our Florida ecosystems. It is not a matter of if we are going to have wildfires, but when will we have wildfires and at what intensity. Homeowners must assume a major role in wildfire protection by taking action to reduce the ignitability of their homes before the threat of a wildfire.
The Florida Forest Service Wildfire Prevention Clown program is the only one of its kind in wildland fire. The prevention clowns teach children about the dangers of wildfire, not to play with matches and how to stay safe. They accomplish this through wildfire skits, magic programs and just talking to them about fire. Kids relate very well to the clowns and their message, remembering it for a long time. Every year at the Florida State Fair, children come by the  Florida Forest Discovery Center looking for their favorite clown. The clowns also accompany Smokey Bear to many programs. Since Smokey can’t talk, the clowns do a very good job of explaining Smokey’s message to the children.

Several years ago, before Trump, I wrote that you should not be surprised when you start hearing about all the illegal things that Obama and his band of thieves did during his tenure in the White House, after he’s out…he ran it like a Racketeering Operation, NOT a Presidency!

But even I am surprised, at how corrupt he made the FBI! In my 28 years, I knew 1 Agent who broke the oath of trust and honor and couldn’t believe he could do that! Now, here’s a whole team of Assistant Directors, DOJ Attorneys…sort of an underground Black Ops! Where’s the head of the snake…(a) Comey, (b)Lynch, (c)Holder, (d)Obama (e) Hillary or (f) all of the above?

Stay tuned for the answers which are soon to come!

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, FISA, was created in 1978 and is intended to improve the ability of the U S Intelligence Agencies to intercept “Foreign” Actors and foreign agencies, committing or believed to be committing illegal acts against the USA.

Remember, our 4th Amendment prohibits illegal Search and Seizure against “US Citizens” and the only way to intercept a citizen’s private conversations is with a Title 3 warrant issued by a duly appointed Federal Judge based upon Probable Cause!

FISA deals with overhears of “Foreigners” and Title 3 pertains to US Citizens but BOTH MUST protect our Constitutional Rights to privacy under our Constitution!

So what happens if the FISA wire picks up a conversation, email, FAX, etc between a foreigner and a citizen? That’s a very big problem that could be a very complicated problem that is covered by rules and regulations that I am not privy too as they are complex, some are classified and I have no experience with the FISA court. I do have experience with Title 3 Applications and have participated in several. Understand this, the entire FISA Court, proceedings, processes and pretty much EVERYTHING about it, is Secret; the FISA court is in a secret location, in a secure, sound proof room that is presumably guarded 24/7. The FISA judges are appointed without House or Senate approval! The reasons for the security are National Security and the 4th Amendment! “ALL” Wire Taps are a very big deal, legally; from a procedure point of view and most importantly, from a Constitutional Right against illegal search and seizure and the citizens Rights to Privacy!

So let’s say that a US citizen is overheard speaking to a KGB agent Comrade Putin. The assumption is made that the overhear is through a legal, FISA wire on Comrade Putin and until proven otherwise, the citizen is “innocent” and their identity must be protected, not shared in any disseminations and follow certain rules and regulations regarding who is entitled to know the citizen’s identity and who can release or “unmask” the identity. Violation of ANY unmasking rules, dissemination rules or FISA Rules allows for severe penalties! It would be in line with arresting someone with no Probable Cause for a warrant or not allowing legal representation, in other words, it is a serious violation of citizens Constitutional Rights!!!

There are BOTH criminal and civil penalties for violating the Regulations!!! People can lose their houses, pensions, savings accounts and the Federal Government or municipalities CANNOT pay punitive damaged!!!

Up until the very end of Obama’s tenure as President there was only a “handful” of people who were allowed to be cognizant of this information HOWEVER, just before President Trump was sworn in, Obama, by Executive Orders allowed the dissemination of this information to almost all Federal Agencies thereby compromising the heretofore security that was afforded by law to the FISA wiretaps. Everyone wondered… why would Obama do that? The reasons are coming to light and it’s not for legitimate reasons!

Now let’s say a corrupt “lawman” or prosecutor fabricated evidence, to obtain EITHER a Title 3 or FISA warrant. Unfortunately fabrication or altering evidence has happened … it happened multiple times during Obama’s corrupt administration. During AG Eric Holder’s tenure, MANY of his Assistant AG’s were held in Contempt of Federal Courts in, Missouri, New Orleans, and Texas for Tampering with Evidence, Tampering with Witnesses , Fabrication of Evidence ,Violating Court Orders and Obstruction! Several were banned from appearing before 23 different Federal Court Districts! What did Obama/Holder do about such serious offenses alleged by Federal Judges in 3 different jurisdictions?? Nothing… after all Holder was himself the first AG in our countries history to be held in Contempt of Congress! So he fit right in with his band of criminal Deputy AGs!
If what we are hearing is true about faulty dossiers being used as PC for FISA warrants, resulting in illegal overhears of US citizens and if numerous lawmen/women and prosecutors, conspired together to alter a Federal Presidential election…this will become the biggest scandal in our country’s history! None of those involved from the highest office to the lowest appointee will escape unscathed!!! That I can promise! How? Because we now have a law and order President who believes in our Rule of Law and he will do whatever it takes to bring ALL…each and every one, to Justice!

Now if, as I suspect, Obama put in place a plan to win Hillary the election, by using all his “Black Ops”, to discredit Trump, create allegations of “Russian Collusion”, allege Obstruction of Justice by the firing of Comey… using ANY info from a FISA warrant based upon a flawed Fusion GPS dossier where a DOJ attorney ,1 door down from the AG, has a wife working for Fusion GPS involving the conspiring with other the players…many people are going to jail.

*Who would benefit by candidate Trump being destroyed by the left?

*Why would someone do that?

*What did Hillary have to gain?

*What did Obama have to gain?

They are both easy to answer questions aren’t they? In Obama case, all his work to “change” America will go down the crapper with a President Trump but NOT with a President Hillary? Hmm!

Who’s going to jail?

This is why I wrote that President Trump needed to appoint a former “retired , older FBI Agent”, as Director because of all the suspected corruption, starting with former Director Comey! Director Wray may be a good ,smart man but he has NO experience as an Agent ,does not know the UNIQUE Rules and Regulations pertaining to being an Agent, does not know the “street Rules” of Miranda warnings, interview rules and the “why” these rules were made and how important they are. That ONLY comes from working important, major, criminal investigations and running into “VIP” subjects, both real and self imagined! These “hot shot” Agents (ADICs), broke every rule in the book for Hillary and the question is, “WHY”? The things they did, that retired Agents like me, who are “out of the loop”, outsiders now, could tell just from the information that is available to the public, that the FIX was in, and I mean …LONG before Comey rendered his illegal prosecutive option to the WHY?!

The answer is that we need a MAJOR RICO CASE, investigation, that must be conducted by FBI Agents ,current and former, brought back to help, handpicked by the President with help from people like former ADIC, Jim Kalstrom under a new DOJ prosecutor (NOT a Special Prosecutor) and a purpose centered Grand Jury with a new Assistant Deputy AG to replace Rosenstein, again, handpicked by the president! This way the President’s duty and responsibility to keep that investigation, honest, unbiased and on the straight and narrow can’t be challenged by a Special Prosecutor who thinks he has a Constitutional exception to being unbiased and is not controlled by the President or DOJ!

Director Wray, in the least, should immediately suspend all the FBI personnel involved in the Clinton email/Trump Election matters that are in question! He should open an “administrative” investigation and every one including McCabe, Strzok, Strzok’s girlfriend ordered to take a lie detector…fired if they refuse and subpoenaed before the Grand Jury while search Warrants are executed on their residences!

Employee refusals may be immediate grounds for dismissal and subsequent criminal charges.

It’s “let’s make a deal time” boys and girls…who’s in?

The NEW Director Wray needs to understand that FBI Agents CANNOT do what these people did, period. I don’t care what Wray’s personal opinion is, or that McCabe will lose his $150K pension and benefits…
READ the AGENT’s Manual of do’s and don’ts!!! McCabe’s time to be sorry and beg forgiveness is LONG gone!

The damage a half dozen people did to the decades old reputation of the FBI for Fidelity Bravery and Integrity has been destroyed by a handful!
That is is unforgivable…six or so people who were NEVER real Agents!

NOW WE UNDERSTAND WHY THESE “PEOPLE” WANT PRESIDENT TRUMP GONE…but I believe the cat is out of the bag and it’s way too late!

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…

We have looked over the plans, and are officially throwing our support to the project presented by TPI Hospitality, locally referred to as

TPI FMB Project Renderings 11 20 17 4

TPI FMB Project Renderings 11 20 17 16TPI FMB Project Renderings 11 20 17 5TPI FMB Project Renderings 11 20 17 8

We like the new proposal for several reasons, the area is in dire need of renovation, the white out store-fronts give the impression of a deserted area right on the edge of times square, until recently, the first thing visitors saw as they came onto the beach was a closed store at the bottom of the bridge on the corner Fifth Street and Estero Blvd.

Luckily the Beach Chamber of Commerce moved into the space. Another thing favorable to the plan is it allows for this space to remain a retail location, it’s the perfect location for the chamber, right at the bottom of the bridge, other thing about this proposal we like are it stays within the 40 foot above flood level parameters, does not rely on the use of Crescent Beach Family Park land or Seafarer’s property, no longer requires a sea wall, and the pool area on the beach side allows for open views from the road of the beach.

One concern perhaps is the Seafarers property, if the county were to decide it wants to develop the space it could damage the views from the hotel rooms facing the beach, TPI Hospitality should get some assurances from the county that the space would be turned into a park as depicted in the artists renderings.

Surely, there will be some tweeks to the designs to be worked out, but we welcome and support the plan!

How Florida Puts Veterans First

Veterans Florida, a state-created organization, helps Veterans make Florida home by providing information on state benefits and connections to jobs and career entrepreneurship training, colleges and universities, and real estate professionals who can help Vets buy the home of their dreams.

Through their Career Services Program, they connect you with Florida employers who are seeking to hire veterans for jobs that put the skills learned in the military to use.

Over 25% of veterans want to start their own business. Opportunity, freedom and challenge attract them to business ownership, maybe you one of them? Veterans Florida has partnered locally with FGCU and state-wide with 5 other institutes of higher learning to create the Veterans Florida Entrepreneurship Program.

This program offers Vets tuition-free, online and on-campus instruction designed to match up with your level of knowledge and your busy schedule, by providing three pathways of instruction.

The first pathway comprises online lessons that will familiarize you with basic terminology and concepts. The second pathway offers specialized workshops held on the campuses of our academic partners. The third pathway is an advanced on-campus program that delves more deeply into all aspects of entrepreneurship.

Seats are limited. The Advanced program starts February 7th but the application process has been open for some time and the deadline to apply is Tuesday January 30, 2018 APPLY TODAY by going to their website: and then click on the "Entrepreneurship Training" link.

From February 2018 to May 2018, selected participants will attend at least 60 hours of in-class training held at one of our participating institutions of higher education. This will prepare participants for all elements of entrepreneurship. The face-to-face instruction will provide an opportunity for hands-on learning and application of fundamental principles facilitated by business experts. The curriculum will include concepts ranging from crafting a business plan to accessing capital for new business ventures.

Following graduation, alumni will have the option to receive ongoing mentorship from our participating institutions, local business leaders, mentors, Veterans Florida staff, and Florida SBDC business consultants. Graduates of the program will have exclusive access to our alumni network, will be invited to alumni events and receive specific feedback regarding their business to get support in navigating common challenges and drive success.

Entrepreneurship Program Eligibility
The program is designed for those who:
• Are one of the following:
• Honorably discharged veteran*
• Active duty US Armed Forces (with 1 year left before discharge)
• Current or former member of the National Guard or Reserves

Other Education Options
Florida waives out-of-state tuition fees for all honorably discharged veterans. This means that if you are a veteran from another state and are accepted into a Florida state college or university, you will qualify for in-state tuition rates, as long as you reside in the state of Florida while pursuing your degree.

Job Listings On Their Site Too
The Florida Veterans site also lists employers and jobs around the state that are now hiring Veterans.
