In March, the US Coast Guard stopped and seized a self-propelled semi-submersible carrying 12,800 pounds of cocaine worth more than $200 million when packaged for street sales.
These semi-submersibles are often referred to as a “Narco submarine,” and their use has been growing as drug cartels continue to seek new ways to smuggle contraband into the U.S.
The submarine just seized was first detected on March 2 by US Customs and Border Protection Air and Marine Operations (AMO) agents operating on board a P-3 Orion Long Range Tracker.
