The first day in September saw a large shake up in the race for County Commissioner in District 1, as Sanibel Mayor Kevin Ruane announced the suspension of his campaign on Tuesday evening. Citing an illness in the family, Ruane has dropped his attempt to unseat incumbent Commissioner John Manning in the republican primary in August of 2016. In a letter he sent out, he says he will stay on in his role as Mayor of Sanibel.

Ruane has stated that he will be returning all of the money contributed to his campaign, which has exceeded $100 thousand since announcing his candidacy on June 3rd.

Ruane’s letter announcing his resignation, dated September 1st 2015, in full:

“Dear Friends:

First of all, I would like to thank you for your support.

My campaign for Lee County Commissioner has been an extraordinary experience. We are so lucky to be able to live in such a wonderful community and the campaign has certainly confirmed that.

However, it is with a heavy heart that I have decided to suspend my candidacy effective immediately. Due to a recent serious health issue with a family member, I am unable to meet the obligations of the campaign at this time. I did not come to this decision lightly, but as many of you know my family is always my primary responsibility and will continue to be.

I plan to continue on as mayor of Sanibel and look forward to seeing many of you over the coming months. Also, please know that I will be returning all of my campaign contributions.

Finally, I want to thank all of you again for your support and encouragement during the campaign.”
