Docking: The Fillet and Release Tournament had 106 boats participating in it this year, which created quite a crowd at Matanzas on the Bay when the deadline for weigh-in neared.

FISH weighinThe notable traffic on Fort Myers Beach was under the bridge rather than on it this past Saturday, September 12, as 106 boats participated in the 11th Annual Fillet and Release Fishing Tournament for Hope Hospice. With the anglers out on the water in force at 7 am, most stayed out until the closing time of 3 pm neared. At about half past two, the tangle of boats getting into the weigh-in station at Matanzas on the Bay could rival the congestion you’d see on Estero Boulevard.

With volunteers quickly measuring, weighing, and releasing the caught snook and redfish, a winner was eventually named: Team Allen, taking home the top prize of $17,430.

Teams were highly motivated to bring their catches in alive, with a quarter pound being added to their total for every fish that was still living.

“We worked our butts off,” Kevin of Team Straight Outta Captain said.

His teammate Dan Carson gave an assessment of how the fishing went that day.

“Red fish were good, but it was tough getting a bite from a snook,” Carson said.

“We finished well,” Mark Stuckey of Team Mudhead said. “We caught a snook, redfish, mackerel, and a few stingrays.” They were aiming for the prize smallest legal redfish, but eventually lost out to Team Low Tide/ Rhonda’s Deli.
