Declaring that businessman Donald Trump is "the only candidate who actually threatens the established powers that have betrayed this county," the National Border Patrol Council (NBPC) endorsed Trump for president on Wednesday.
Up until Wednesday's announcement, the NBPC has never issued a primary endorsement for any presidential candidate, but says it is time to break "with past practice."
Since he announced his candidacy to run for President on the Republican ticket, Trump has made immigration a cornerstone for the GOP nomination. He has promised to build a wall on the U.S -m Mexican border and has said he would find a way to get the Mexican government to pay for it.

His stance on immigration has been consistent and has resonated with voters who have propelled him to lead candidate status in both closed and open primaries. His strong tone and approach to border security along with a commitment to instituting strong security measure for vetting immigrants from areas where Muslim extremism reigns, including temporarily stopping come immigrant flows has earned him broad support including many cross over Democrats. For example, the border patrol union -an affiliate of the American Federation of Government Employees - , which endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in December.

According to the Associated Press, "The union has been a long-time critic of the Obama administration's border and immigration policies. Last July, a union local in Laredo, Texas offered to give Trump a tour of the border in Texas, but withdrew the offer after "communicating with members of the NBPC at the national level."
In recognition of the porous nature of America's southern border, Trump has said he would "triple the number of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who enforce immigration law."
Following the NBPC's statement, Trump expressed deep gratitude for the union's endorsement, saying, "it represents a total rejection of the corrupt politicians who have allowed transnational gangs and cartels to terrorize American communities."
