New Bonita Library Down to Location

Lee County officials say they’re now chomping at the bit to build the new $12.5 million county library in Bonita Springs.

It’s not a question of if, or when, but where.

When Lee County officials were hand-picking the firm they wanted to run the $50 million, decade-long Estero Boulevard project at Fort Myers Beach one of the things they said they needed was someone who could handle the constant attention such a high-profile project would command.

That part they got right.

Lee County Commissioner Larry Kiker and County Manager Roger Desjarlais visited the Bonita Springs city council August 5.

The commissioner and the manager mostly pitched the virtues of the county’s new Growth Increment Funding scheme. Bonita council members were not impressed.

Lee Maintains Same Tax Rate

Lee County commissioners voted unanimously August 4 to keep the county property tax rate the same next year as it is this year.

It will cost the Village of Estero not quite $3 million next year to have Lee County continue providing services.

The people who mid-wifed the birth of the Village of Estero will tell you that it was borne of a desire to protect its territory from being annexed into the neighboring city of Bonita Springs.

That’s true.
