By Executive Order specifically direct all law enforcement to enforce the Communist Control Act of 1954 ...that outlawed the Communist Party USA and criminalized membership in or support for the party or “Communist-action organizations” on the basis that communists vowed to overthrow the government of the United States. That is enough to arrest and charge them! Similarly ... Islam ... is a SLAM DUNK ...according to the Quran, by the well-respected Abdullah Yusuf Ali, which calls for “DEATH TO INFIDELS” throughout ...and special punishment for JEWS, specifically referring to them, as “PIGS” ...! There is no doubt that Islam calls for death to the infidels ...the US ...as they have demonstrated their pugnacious acts openly, demonstrative and want to change and/or alienate us ...the Infidels ...that’s you ... US ...and any non-Muslims! Omar, AOC, the other members ...think that the Oath to become a US Citizens is a COMIC BOOK. It sure as hell is not! Page 3 The Sun Bay Paper September 1, 2026 Aaron Rodgers Drops a Bomb on Tony Fauci, the ‘Absolute Coward’ Future Football Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers is preparing for his last season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, so he was flippant in a recent interview with his pal Pat McAfee at ESPN. When asked about his mindset during his final year, Rodgers wisecracked: “I’m going to plead the Fifth. Like that absolute coward Tony Fauci.” Rodgers, along with other famous athletes like tennis star Novak Djokovic, decided against getting the COVID vaccine, and professed that he wasn’t going to worry about a “cancel-culture casket.” He fudged an answer that he was “inoculated,” giving the false impression he’d gotten a COVID shot. If you make millions for being in peak physical condition, it’s understandable you might worry about the effects of a newly manufactured vaccine. When Rodgers became sick with COVID during the 2021 season, sports journalists ganged up on his decision. NBC’s Mike Florio trashed him as a “big fat liar” running a “scam.” “He deliberately staked out the position that he thought would result in the least scorn and criticism from the media,” Florio wrote. “And most in the media were of the mind that you should get vaccinated. So this all goes back to his sensitivity.” Now the shoe is on the other foot, and it’s Dr. Fauci who looks like a liar running a bit of a scam. His private writings about the origins and death rate of COVID were at odds with his public statements. So naturally, Rodgers went after Fauci when given the platform: “Are you kidding me? Yeah, 111 times, and you’ve got a pardon and pleaded over 100 times. What are you scared of, Tony?” Rodgers cracked: “I thought you were ‘I am Science.’ And you get up there and you can’t answer a question. I thought you had a pardon there, Tony? Why couldn’t you answer one question the entire time?” Rodgers added: “Now, they can’t talk about the COVID stuff, because, obviously, it was made in a lab in China; that’s not even questionable now. Tony Fauci is an absolute criminal.” Rodgers wondered whether the media that hounded him five years ago did “even a minute” on Fauci pleading the Fifth. The TV networks definitely did -- but they maintained their pro-Fauci bias, that his Fifth Amendment routine wasn’t as offensive as the Republican demands for accountability. For those who are outraged at the idea that Fauci could be prosecuted for his COVID pronouncements or his failure to testify, they should recall how the other side of the debate fervently wanted to put unvaccinated Americans in prisons or detention camps for endangering people’s health. Liberals have assaulted Rodgers for having no background in science and spreading “misinformation” about public health. This is fascinating because they love it when leftist athletes pronounce on subjects about which they have no credentials to discuss. That might be because they think leftists can be painted as the right kind of people, the smart people. Take retired soccer star Megan Rapinoe, who has inveighed against the conservatives and their attempted “genocide” and “erasure” of transgender activists. She favors including biological men in women’s sports, and no one in the elitist media attacks her for having no medical background. No one attacks her gender-bending viewpoint as “misinformation.” Star athletes have an obvious platform to share cultural and political opinions. Conservatives have objected that their athletic excellence doesn’t make them any wiser than the masses. But the Left loves promoting the hot takes of their favorite athletes, adding glamour to their leftist views, while they try to cancel opinions they can’t abide. Tim Graham Director of Media Analysis at the Media Research Center and Executive Editor of the blog NewsBusters.org How to Have More Money You need more money, and you need it now. What are your choices? You have two: You can increase your income, or you can reduce your spending. There are several ways you can increase your income: INCREASE INCOME Get a bigger paycheck. Ask for a raise; land a new job that pays a lot more; or get a second (or third) job to supplement your income. Win the lottery. Keep in mind when considering this option that your chances of being struck by lightning are much higher than your chances of winning the lottery. Sell your assets. Find a cash buyer for your grandmother’s sterling silver, your boat or some other asset. All of these are ways for you to increase your income and improve your financial picture. But let’s get real: If you could do any of these things, you would have done so already, and we wouldn’t be having this conversation. While increasing your income is a way to change your financial picture in theory, it is not always easy or effective. More income means higher taxes and increased work-related expenses. And it does nothing to address old habits of overspending and incurring too much debt. Your second option to change your financial situation is to reduce spending. REDUCE SPENDING Unless you are living below the poverty line, I am confident you can reduce your expenditures without compromising your standard of living. Target every area. The secret is to look at every area of spending and reduce it a little bit. It all adds up! Instantaneous. When you reduce your expenses, the effect is instantaneous. The money you don’t spend remains in your pocket. It’s your money, and it has already been taxed. Every expense you have is a candidate for some type of systematic reduction. Less stress. Reducing your expenses forces you to focus on what really matters. You begin to notice unneeded baggage, and you’re more willing to acknowledge what brings you joy, what needs to go and how to create the life you love. More contentment. Throwing conspicuous consumption into reverse has a calming effect on both adults and kids. Overindulging complicates life and causes much stress. The key to achieving financial freedom is to spend less than you earn. It takes desire and commitment to live below your means without giving up your style and your quality of life. Don’t worry that you’re going to lose your dignity. In fact, no one needs to know about your new resolve to find ways to drastically cut your expenses. You don’t have to print “I’m Cheap!” on your forehead. A better option is to engrave this motto in your mind: Wherever I am, whatever I do, there is a way to do it for less. Page 4 The Sun Bay Paper September 1, 2026 Readers are always asking me if I could recommend a good book about Social Security. I always steer them to the best book out there. It’s called “Social Security Simple and Smart -- 10 easy-to-understand fact sheets that will answer all your questions about Social Security.” And it just happens to be written by yours truly! I bring this up today because the (slightly delayed) 2026 version of the book is now available. I redo the book every year to incorporate the latest numbers that are updated by law annually. For example, when I talk about the earnings penalty that applies to Social Security beneficiaries under their full retirement age who are still working, the 2025 edition of the book says the earnings limit is $23,400 and the 2026 edition says the earnings limit is now $24,480. There are about a dozen of these kinds of number changes that I update every year. I also re-read the book each year and, always finding some rules or other issues that I could have explained more clearly, I update those sections accordingly. This year, I had to totally re-write the section on government employees and Social Security because of the recently-passed “Fairness Act.” I also slightly expanded the section on Medicare, although as I always point out, I’m a Social Security expert but not much of a Medicare expert. If you are wondering why the subtitle of the book refers to “fact sheets,” it’s because in the past, I used to have a series of fact sheets I would send to the readers of this column. Each of those fact sheets covered a major part of Social Security. Because I would often get the same questions over and over again emailed to me by the readers, instead of “reinventing the wheel” by answering those questions each time, I would simply say, “Read the attached fact sheet and it should answer all your questions.” And I eventually decided to simply incorporate those fact sheets into one book. So anyway, here is a rundown of what’s in that book. It begins with a section that debunks the top ten myths about Social Security. Interestingly, I start out that section saying, “I could write a book called ‘The top 100 Social Security Myths.” And guess what? I have. That book is called “Social Security - 100 Myths and 100 Facts.” After the myth section of the book, we get to the fact sheets. Fact Sheet No. 1 is called “Social Security Basics.” It provides an introduction to the Social Security program. Fact Sheet No. 2 is called “Myths and Facts about Social Security Financing.” There are just so darn many rumors and myths floating around on the Internet about how Social Security works and is financed. This fact sheet tackles all those silly and misleading myths and sets the record straight. It also includes a section that discusses serious and workable proposals for Social Security reform. Fact Sheet No. 3 is the most popular. It is called “When to take your Social Security benefits.” It clarifies all the rules associated with retirement benefit eligibility and explains the mechanics of applying for benefits. Fact Sheet No. 4 is called “Working after retirement and the earnings penalty.” This chapter explains the convoluted rules that apply to Social Security recipients who are under their full retirement age but still working. Fact Sheet No. 5 is the second most popular part of the book. It is called “A woman’s guide to Social Security.” It explains the benefits a woman might be due on a husband’s, or ex-husband’s, Social Security record. It also explains the benefits available to widows and divorced widows. (By the way, the same rules apply to husbands and widowers.) Fact Sheet No. 6, called “Benefits for children,” explains benefits available for the children of retirees or for the children of people getting disability benefits. Survivor benefits for the children of a deceased parent are also discussed. Fact Sheet No. 7 is called “Disability benefits from Social Security.” It clarifies everything you need to know about the Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability programs. It includes a section with tips for getting your disability claim approved. It also includes information for disabled senior citizens. Fact Sheet No. 8 is called “Social Security and Public Employees.” This is the rewritten section I talked about earlier in this column. It provides information about the recently passed Social Security Fairness Act that increased Social Security benefits for those public employees who spent most of their careers working at government jobs not covered by Social Security. Fact Sheet No. 9, called “When Social Security says you owe them money,” was written for anyone who has received an overpayment letter from the Social Security Administration. Fact Sheet No. 10 is called “Working after your Social Security checks start: will your additional income increase your Social Security check?” And this fact sheet answers that question. And finally, there are two bonus fact sheets at the end of the book: “What to do when someone getting a Social Security check dies,” And “A Quick Medicare Overview.” And as long as I’m shamelessly promoting my two Social Security books, let me mention some other books I’ve written -- even though they have nothing to do with Social Security. My readers may be surprised to learn that I’m not just a boring old former government employee who writes columns and books about Social Security. I’m also a grandpa who writes stories for his grandchildren. And I just turned several of those stories into published children’s books. One is a cute little story called “A House Made out of Shells.” Here’s the opening stanza to the book: “Emily lived by the sea in a house made out of shells. And when a breeze blew off the seas, they tinkled like little bells.” And then there is “Molly’s Magic Laces” about a girl who likes to run. But when she straps on her magic shoelaces, she ends up running to far-flung places around the world. “Elliot Fixes Things” is about a young boy who, like his dad, can fix almost anything. And finally, “Lucy’s Really Big Horse Ranch” is about a little girl who loves horses and ends up having the biggest horse ranch in the world. If you have a child, grandchild, niece or nephew, I think they will really love any of these little books. All the books I mentioned in today’s column are available from Amazon or Barnes and Noble. If you are ordering the Simple and Smart book on Amazon, and the 2026 edition does not show up when you first click on it, then look for the link that says “See all formats and editions,” and you will find the 2026 edition there. Tom Margenau If you have a Social Security question, Tom Margenau has two books with all the answers. One is called “Social Security -- Simple and Smart: 10 Easy-to-Understand Fact Sheets That Will Answer All Your Questions About Social Security.” The other is “Social Security: 100 Myths and 100 Facts.” You can find the books at Amazon.com or other book outlets. Or you can send him an email at thomas.margenau@ comcast.net. Simple and Smart Update

(I wrote this 4 years ago...the facts are indisputable...we need Fossil Fuels as much as we need food... don’t be stupid!) ENERGY In 2005, the largest oil reserve in the world was discovered…THE GREEN RIVER OIL RESERVE IN COLORADO. Pres. Bush ordered 3000 test wells drilled by independent private contractors and announced after all results were studied that this is the largest oil reserve ever discovered. It is mostly on government-owned land and holds more oil than the rest of the world! Since then, 8,000 more test holes have further substantiated the studies. An excerpt from testimony about the Green River Formation that Anu K. Mittal provided, Government Accountability Office (GAO) Director of Natural Resources and Environment, to the House Subcommittee on Energy and Environment, Committee on Science, Space, and Technology: “The Green River Formation…contains the world’s largest deposits of oil shale. USGS estimates that the Green River Formation contains about 3 trillion barrels of oil, and about half of this may be recoverable, depending on available technology and economic conditions. The Rand Corporation, a nonprofit research organization, estimates that 30 to 60 percent of the oil shale in the Green River Formation can be recovered. At the midpoint of this estimate, almost half of the 3 trillion barrels of oil would be recoverable. This is an amount about equal to the entire world’s proven oil reserves”. The Green River is oil shale, and although it is recoverable, we need better and more efficient methods to recover the product economically. However, there is no doubt this will happen, but the government must stop interfering with the companies that spend research money, obtain permits that are cancelled, trying to produce the product, my opinion! In 2020 President Biden stopped all tests, drilling, and everything on the Green River! In 2008, the 2nd largest oil reserve in the Cont’d on page 6

Page 6 The Sun Bay Paper September 1, 2026 Cont’d from pg 5 world was discovered in North Dakota. The Bakken formation covers many States, including western North Dakota, northeastern Montana, and part of Canada. According to the USGS, this reserve also has an undetermined amount of natural gas! Until then, Prudhoe Bay WAS the largest oil reserve in the US…it’s now THIRD! In December 2021, the USGS completed an oil and gas estimate for the Bakken and Three Forks Formations in the Williston Basin of Montana and North Dakota. The estimate includes 4.3 billion barrels of unconventional oil and 4.9 trillion cubic feet of unconventional natural gas in the two formations. In May 2020, the North Dakota Oil & Gas Division estimated that over 7,500 oil and gas wells in North Dakota were shut down, preventing 510,000 barrels a day of production. The reason the Biden administration gave was COVID-19 and not economically feasible! When Obiden and Hussein closed the Keystone Pipeline, they also closed others and natural gas power plants. Obama closed 45% of our coal plants. We are now at 80% of full capacity. NY Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said nobody should care because the Keystone Pipeline, “has not moved 10 cents worth of oil since it started!” Gillibrand should be on top of something like this and yet... she seems to like being on the bottom! Try to keep up Kirsten! Actually, since its opening in 2010 to 2019, the Keystone has delivered 1.3 billion barrels of oil through the 2,700 miles of Keystone Pipeline that traverse the US to Illinois to parts west. Parts 1 and 2 of the Keystone project were delivering over 510,000 barrels a day when Biden/Obama stopped it cold. Part 3 was to expand to the Keystone Pipeline Project... Between all our resources stopped for whatever reasons, our oil production dropped from 19 million barrels a day under Trump to less than 9 million barrels a day. THERE’S A REASON FOR FOOD SHORTAGES, GAS PRICES, ALL THE SHORTAGES NOWAND SOON TO COME!!! Obama drained the oil emergency reserves to zero. Trump brought them to 110%. Biden is bringing them back to zero! Why? There is no standby power! How long can you hold out without natural gas, coal, oil, gasoline, diesel, electric power (80% is still fossil fuel), food and drinking water? CLIMATE CHANGE Define Climate Change. If you can, leave a comment. When you think you can define “Climate Change”, explain how you can stop it. For example, the left hung out the “Global Warming Shingle” for the Gore Decades – until Gore and his Gorites decided there was no evidence, no proof, so they made it up. Gore and the left relied on the UN IPCC for their evidence of Global Warming. Ironically, the “CC” in UNIPCC stands for Climate Change. It was always Global Warming until Gore and others said, “Based upon 18 years of our UNIPCC Model on Global Warming, we can now say the Earth is warming, the glaciers are melting, the Arctic and Antarctic ice caps are melting, and polar bears are dying. Gore predicted the glaciers will be gone by 2015. (It’s August 2, 2026, ... the glaciers are still here...Al.) John Coleman, creator of the Weather Channel and dedicated weatherman, took the “Model of 18 years” as did other scientists and compared what the model predicted to actual temperatures. There was no correlation whatsoever. NASA admitted the “UNIPCC” is useless at predicting anything! The Arctic lost one million square miles of ice from 2002 to 2012 but regained one million square miles of ice from 2012 to 2013! (Lost one million in 10 years and recovered/gained one million in one year... wow...sound like cooling to me!) ...Al We never heard that! Then scientists looked into how they measured the temperatures “globally.” In the first place, they did not measure them globally! All the temperatures were taken in the US. Next, the UNIPCC forced the Colleges who wanted grant money to sign a contract that they agreed there was Global Warming and would try to prove it. The temperatures they took and recorded were taken at ground level, on blacktop parking lots, some protected by fences, others not, some with a continuous recording “pen” register that self-record others not. Most students tending to the “tests” had no training. John Coleman went to all states and countries with polar bears and examined records on the polar bear population as far as they went. In all cases, polar bear populations increased. Now, if that is not enough, there are no scientific tests anywhere that prove anything about global warming. However, there are some studies that prove the Antarctic ice mass is bigger, colder, and thicker than 10,000 years ago! Who did that test? In 2015, NASA did borings, carbon-dated to 10,000 years ago, and proved it…that’s when they said the IPCC model is useless! The Earth was created 4.5 billion years ago at 30,000 degrees F. Today, there is a core of molten mass about 5,000 miles in diameter at 10,000 degrees F. CLIMATE CHANGE Temperature, atmospheric, subterranean, volcanic, wind, rain, snow, and other factors combine and cause weather. Climate change has existed since the creation of planet Earth and has always been and will always be in continuous flux, no matter what man does or doesn’t do! CARBON DIOXIDE CO2 is necessary for plant life to live and for the photosynthesis of oxygen, which we breathe! The ideal concentration for trees is 2000PPM. The minimum the trees need is 250 PPM. We currently have 450 PPM CO2 in the atmosphere. By forces unknown to science, excess CO2 falls into the oceans. According to Patrick Moore, founder of Green Peace, if your greenhouse plants are dying, stick your car exhaust into the greenhouse overnight and run your engine. You won’t believe the results! Dr. Moore also says we need to INCREASE CO2 to 2000PPM! There is no evidence that methane, CO2, or other gases have any adverse effects. NONE...so stop the nonsense! If you send a comment on Climate Change, first define it. Then what do you believe you can do to change it! J. Page 8 The Sun Bay Paper September 1, 2026 OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT TRUMP MR. PRESIDENT, I am seeing some major blunders by DOJ and FBI! It seems nobody understands the Immunity/Protection Laws. The ENTIRE, SOLE reason for Immunity or Pardon is so that a citizen can FREELYADMIT HIS GUILT for crimes he committed WITHOUT repercussions in return for his testimony, cooperation, waiving his 5th Amendment Rights! The “President or AG” has the power when it comes to Federal Criminal Law to force someone to talk! If a subject is granted immunity, they must admit to their crimes, agree to testify and that they will give up their 5th Amendment Rights ...it always comes with conditions, and they MUST swear TO TELL THE TRUTH. If he does not tell the truth, if he lies just once, if he changes his mind, if he pleads the 5th, they lose that immunity AND can be forced to comply by charging them with the crimes that he just swore he committed, starting with perjury! If he lies after being granted immunity ...if he continues to refuse to answer truthfully, the Grand Jury then charges that defendant with the crimes “he admitted to committing” and is put in jail, with NO MORE delays ...he spends the rest of this Grand Jury’s session, in jail! It gets better ...the Federal Judge, after the current Grand Jury time expires ...brings in the new Grand Jury and defendant and asks if he wants to cooperate. If he doesn’t ...the whole cycle starts again! It gets even better ...there can be no bail. The entire term must be served this time around ...each and every time! I was going to get into all those treason crimes Obiden and his staff committed and name all the laws they violated, but CANNOT weasel their way out of, because... there is NOT a Statute of Limitation for Treason. There is NONE ...and too many Democraps have committed too many acts of Treason to tie up the paper ...right now. There is something that you MUST DO ... that is to DESTROY Iran’s Sharia Law ...period! Mr. President, I know you do not want to hurt anybody BUT you took an oath to protect, defend, preserve the Constitution and all it represents. Sharia Muslims are taking over everything. You must stop them with that Proclamation ...but THIS TIME stop ALL non-US “citizen Muslims” from entering. Here’s where we have an issue … a big issue! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS AN “AMERICAN MUSLIM”! Our constitution demands a separation of church and state (“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,” first amendment). Now find that in the Quran …OOPS …. It’s not there. In fact, their book of faith demands the unification of what they call “religion” (Islam)?! Punishment for violating the Quran is death. Now do the same with “Honor Killings” ...the same as our “Bill of Rights ...Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”! DUE PROCESS- Citizen Gets Lawyer! Sharia- no Lawyer, no Evidence? Take custody of the entire country and keep everything energy related until WE recover from the battles ...spoils of war. Nail down the islands of value, with the least threat capability (cannot back-shoot, so to speak). On January 14,1979, the Shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi fled Iran!! On April 1, 1979, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Iran. On April 1,1979 (the BIGGEST APRIL FOOL EVER) ...Jimmy Carter ... virtually turned Iran over to the Ayatollah! I take that back ...the BIGGEST DAMN FOOL ...period! Carter ...the IQ of fish! Carter’s staff led Carter to believe that the new Ayatollah was a humanitarian...!? Eight months later, the Ayatollah Khomeini turned his animals loose on the US Embassy in Iran, allowing them to kidnap “66”, mostly US Diplomats! Mr. President, almost since the beginning, when Islam was created by Mohamed with 300 “soldiers” whose first battle, March 624 AD and Mohamed’s last alleged last was 632 AD. The dates that events happened in Islam’s early life are vague, because there were no typewriters and get this, Mohamed could not read, nor write, nor spell. Some 1500 years ago Islam created death and destruction and were gaining followers!? The ISIS you destroyed is the first, true effort to stop Islam ...their murderous efforts! Make Iran the next! What makes Islam so dangerous is that they kill for profit ...they make Al Capone look like child’s play. Where Al Capone followers killed some 10 people in the St Valentine’s Day Massacre, Islam killed 3,000... not on any special date! Name one “religion” that kills you if you refuse to pay a “JIZYA”, BLACKMAIL! Islam is a criminal organization ...MURDER FOR HIRE ...and anybody who says, “No they are not”, is dumber than a brick, by scaring you with threats, bombs, assignations, or JIZYA ...not just my opinion ...but FACT! What’s JIZYA you may ask? It’s BLACKMAIL MONEY ...they want to call it JIZYA! Mr. President, you will NEVER ever, ever, ever get a real agreement, a meaningful treaty with Islam ...never ...ever! If it doesn’t benefit Islam 100% ...it is meaningless. They kill their women for not wearing their scarves over their heads! They kill their offspring if they don’t marry Islam ...and call it an honor killing! Every time you drop a bomb ...visualize the Twin Towers, Pentagon, and the PA open field.. J. Page 9 The Sun Bay Paper September 1, 2026 When Privilege Turns Against America There is a question increasingly worth asking: Why do some of America’s most privileged young people seem to have become among its harshest critics, not merely challenging policies but speaking as though America itself is fundamentally corrupt, oppressive or unworthy of their loyalty? This is certainly not true of every young white American. Millions love their country, serve in the military, volunteer in their communities, build businesses, raise families and appreciate the opportunities America has afforded them. Nor is criticism inherently anti-American. Some of our greatest patriots challenged this nation precisely because they wanted it to live up to its promises. But something deeper is happening within parts of our culture. There is an unmistakable irony: Some of those most disillusioned with America have benefited enormously from the stability, prosperity, education, freedom and security it provides. Perhaps privilege itself helps explain why. When you have never lived without freedom, freedom can become invisible. If you have never feared imprisonment for criticizing your government, free speech can seem ordinary. If you have never experienced genuine economic scarcity, capitalism’s flaws can appear larger than the prosperity it has helped create. If you have never lived under authoritarianism, constitutional government can look frustratingly slow rather than remarkably protective. We often understand the value of something only after experiencing its absence. Education matters too. Young Americans should learn about slavery, Jim Crow, the displacement and mistreatment of Native Americans, Japanese American internment, discrimination, political corruption and America’s foreign-policy failures. A confident nation does not hide from its sins. But history becomes distorted when we teach only the sins. Students should also understand the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the extraordinary experiment in self-government they represent. They should learn about abolition and emancipation, women’s suffrage, the civil rights movement, religious liberty and the generations of Americans who forced their country to expand the meaning of its founding promises. The remarkable thing about America is not that it has always lived up to its ideals. It hasn’t. The remarkable thing is that those ideals have repeatedly provided the moral foundation Americans used to confront the country’s failures. Frederick Douglass challenged America by appealing to its own principles. Abraham Lincoln invoked the Declaration’s promise that all men are created equal. Martin Luther King Jr. did not ask America to abandon its founding creed; he demanded that America honor it. That distinction matters enormously. Social media has complicated the picture by creating an economy of outrage in which the most extreme declaration often receives the greatest attention. Nuance rarely goes viral. Gratitude is not provocative. Saying America is complicated generates fewer reactions than declaring America evil. For young people searching for identity and community, political outrage can become a form of belonging. Nor is there anything new about young generations challenging established institutions. Young Americans protested the Vietnam War. Earlier generations challenged racial segregation, economic inequality and traditional social structures. Youth should question authority. The danger begins when questioning becomes contempt, and skepticism becomes historical amnesia. There is also an uncomfortable irony: The freedom to condemn America is itself profoundly American. In many parts of the world, publicly declaring your nation illegitimate or fundamentally evil could cost you your education, livelihood or liberty. In America, you can condemn the president, burn the flag, organize demonstrations, attack the government in print and campaign to transform the country. The Constitution protects even your right to question the Constitution. That is not evidence of a perfect country. It is evidence of an extraordinarily free one. But those concerned about anti-American attitudes should resist the opposite extreme: blind nationalism. Patriotism does not require pretending America has never done wrong. Love is not blindness. You can love your family while acknowledging its failures. You can love your faith while wrestling with difficult questions. And you can love America while demanding better from its government and institutions. Responsible citizenship requires it. The answer to anti-Americanism is therefore not censorship or anger. It is better education, greater perspective and deeper engagement. Let young Americans encounter societies where speech is restricted, economic mobility is limited, religious freedom is uncertain or political opposition carries genuine risk. Teach them history all of it. Let them read Thomas Jefferson alongside Frederick Douglass, Lincoln alongside W.E.B. Du Bois, Adam Smith alongside Karl Marx, and The Federalist Papers alongside their critics. Then trust them to think. And teach gratitude without demanding obedience. America is not exceptional because Americans are inherently better than everyone else. Its strength lies in a constitutional framework that allows imperfect people to disagree, reform institutions, replace leaders peacefully and continue pursuing ideals that even the founders failed fully to achieve. Every generation inherits that unfinished work. Young Americans should criticize injustice, challenge hypocrisy and demand accountability from corporations, universities, media institutions and government, including presidents of both parties. But there is a profound difference between saying “America can do better” and concluding that “America is irredeemable.” One demands progress. The other abandons hope. We should teach the next generation neither that America can do no wrong nor that America has done no right. Give them the entire story. Mature patriotism requires two things simultaneously: the courage to confront what America has gotten wrong, and the wisdom to cherish what America has gotten right. A nation survives not because its citizens believe it is perfect but because enough of them believe it remains worth improving, defending and passing on. DAILY EDITORIALS BY: ARMSTRONG WILLIAMS

Page 10 The Sun Bay Paper September 1, 2026 Tree-Buying Tips Q: We are moving to a new state and don’t know much about the trees that grow there. Can you give us some tips on what to look for? We have looked at some top 10 lists for trees to grow in the area, but they are confusing and list plants that we would never use in our current landscape. A: Check with the town that you are moving to and see if they have a list of trees that they don’t want people to plant and a list of preferred trees. Trees on the first list may be overplanted or may produce messy fruit. Trees on the preferred list are usually nice trees that are underrepresented on the tree census. My first tip is to try to get a tree that no one else in the neighborhood has. That way, your tree will have less of a chance of getting an insect or disease later on. A brand-new neighborhood may not have many trees yet, so it will be hard to prevent others from copying your choice. Ask several of your local nursery people what their top 10 bestselling trees are -- and then don’t buy one of them. Ask them which one they would have in their own yard. All deciduous trees are going to lose their leaves each fall. Evergreen trees will lose their needles in the fall or spring, depending on the variety. How much work do you want to do raking leaves? Trees with large leaves create larger messes in the fall than trees with small leaves. Large leaves look like a trash can blew over when the leaves accumulate under the shrubs in the landscape. We all want trees that grow quickly, never have any problems and do not create any work, but we also want them to be alive. Even silk plants would need to be dusted once in a while. Most fast-growing trees are also short-lived and not too sturdy. They lose more twigs and other debris and have more insect and disease problems than longer-lived trees. Fortunately, many trees are fast or at least faster-growing while they are young. Slow growing trees grow less than 1 foot per year, while medium growth rate trees grow 1-2 feet and finally, fast growers grow trunks and branches at a rate of over 2 feet per year. This is the best time of year to look at the shade tree’s future location. Decide which part of the house you want to be shaded and go outside between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on any summer day. Determine which direction the sun is coming from by looking at your shadow. You will be able to get a range of tree locations by seeing where the shadow points at the part of the house you want to be shaded. The best time to pick a tree for its fall color is in the fall, so you can see what color it turns. The best time to pick a flowering tree is when it is in bloom, so you can be sure to get the flower color you want. Trees with large flowers, such as magnolia, catalpa and jacaranda, will cause a bigger mess under the tree when the flowers fall off than a tree with small flowers, such as crab apple, crepe myrtle or redbud. Few large shade trees are available in seedless forms, but there are seedless ash, ginkgo and honey locust. Small flowering trees may produce fruit that birds eat. The fruit then passes through the birds and onto sidewalks, patios and car windows. Birch and aspen trees have white trunks, but other white-barked trees such as sycamore and eucalyptus drop a lot of bark, creating another messy time of year. Be careful of trees with thorns. There are thornless varieties of hawthorn and honey locust trees. Trees with thorns make good security hedges, but don’t plant them near sidewalks, patios or driveways. Many of today’s subdivision landscapes are smaller than in the past. They need smaller trees. Before you buy the tree, find out what the mature size and shape will be. Trees come in a variety of shapes. They can be tall and skinny or short and round. Deciduous trees can even be pyramidal like a Christmas tree. Another thing that is more common these days is solar panels. Even if the new house doesn’t have them initially, plan ahead for where shade trees will be planted so they won’t shade a potential future solar panel. Some tree species are native to dry landscapes, and some to wet landscapes. Aspens, birches and many maples are shoreline or lowland trees. Many, but not all, oaks, hickory, linden and honey locust trees are native to upland and drier areas. Birch trees are pretty, but they don’t grow well on a berm or between the street and sidewalk. Some of the maples that grow in wet areas have very shallow roots that grow near the surface so they can get oxygen. They will grow near the surface in the landscape, making it impossible to grow grass under the tree. I have looked at some of the top 10 lists myself, and you are right: There are some trees that shouldn’t be on any list of home landscape trees. The trees are pretty, but they grow huge or have problems with being messy. They make good trees for natural areas and for parks or golf courses, but not for a small landscape. Different environments bring out different sides of you. You’re one person at the carnival and another at the library. Since (SET ITAL)who(END ITAL) you are depends, at least in part, on (SET ITAL)where(END ITAL) you are, you may plan to spend more time in a particular location -- perhaps the one that introduces you to a version of yourself you don’t often see. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). You don’t have to explain why you went left instead of right. Let them follow you if they want to know. And if that doesn’t solve the mystery for them, good. Let them keep guessing. Your process is working for you this week, and that’s what counts. Nothing and no one can get in the way of your momentum. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). Though conversations, books, classes and even therapy can certainly enrich a life, they rarely replace experience as a teacher. Your self-knowledge comes from doing, trying, failing, recovering and discovering what holds up in the real world. This week calls on that strength. CANCER (June 22-July 22). You stopped demanding things when you were a toddler because you discovered it was far more effective to deploy your charm. This week, you will once again get all you want and need as you lean into your fetching gifts. You don’t want attention as much as you want others to want to give it to you, and they certainly will. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). This week, it feels like too much work to keep a tally of every little interaction. Unless you’re at work, it seems unnecessary or even petty to give too much attention to the math of relationships. Maturity allows you to view relationships from a long perspective. Your capacity for love is so vast, it just feels good to put it out there. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). People show appreciation in different ways. Some say it, and some bring help, resources, gifts or attention. You have favorably impacted others, and their efforts of respect and friendship will come in various forms, so look out with a generous interpretation and you may be moved by the quirky way they show up. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). A job that was fun in the early stages may have lost luster now that you’re in the hundredth repetition, and yet you continue on -- most likely because someone needs you now. The responsibility will become fulfilling once more. Push through the tedium because there’s something on the other side that will fortify you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). You care less about impressing other people than about becoming the kind of person you admire. This week’s challenge seems unassuming enough -- maybe even a little boring. But hidden in its mundane package is an opportunity to make noble choices and do yourself proud. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). You needed something and found a way to make it happen. Your need was the first proof that others might want it, too, and this week, their response will confirm the demand. What began as a personal solution could become a valuable service, and you have just the mind and followthrough to make it happen. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). A missing piece of information is a space where your imagination can run amok. Determine if you really need to know or simply would rather know. Avoid wasting time chasing the unnecessary when you could be placing your attention on endeavors that really make a difference to you and yours. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Do you suspect you’re working on the wrong things? Some items on your to-do list may not align with what’s ideal for the outcome you’re seeking. Since you’re so intuitive this week, the fastest way to know what matters is to notice what keeps interrupting your thoughts. There’s an important reason it keeps coming up. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). You can’t help how you feel, but managing those feelings is a skill you’re determined to master. You’ll make progress this week. Every feeling that comes up is an opportunity to practice awareness. You’ll name emotions and meet them with curiosity to whatever extent you are able. THIS WEEK’S BIRTHDAYS: Welcome to the Year of Time’s Love, when your relationship with the “now moment” makes you time’s best friend. You are often happily absorbed in what you’re doing, engaging your body, mind and heart at once. Whatever your pace, it’s perfect for noticing and enjoying life while reaching your goals. More highlights: You attract just the companions who will most enrich your experiences. Your financial discipline allows you to have what counts to you. You’ll gain skills to leverage your resources and explore your creativity.
