The Sun Bay Paper Page 23 May 6, 2022 - May 19, 2022 Cont to pg 27 Whenever you hear the statement, “It’s for the children,” you had better start looking a lot deeper into the subject because that is an emotional trigger that is used to hide something. For decades we had heard that teachers are so grossly underpaid that we need to give them all raises ⏤substantial raises. This has now occurred. We were told they are so overworked that we need to reduce class sizes substantially; this too has occurred. We were told that teachers gave up wonderful careers in business to teach our children, so they deserve so much more, which of course, is unproven. We have no clue as to whether they would have even been able to hold down a job, let alone have a wonderfully successful career in business. Whether or not they’re lacking in getting the appropriate appreciation financially for the work, that is in need of some serious public debate, but one of the things that teachers don’t lack is the brass supplied by their unions. Many years ago, Tim Gantert wrote an article, “Teacher upset she can’t retire at 47”, about how a teacher from Saginaw Township, Michigan, who “says she would tell her students not to become a teacher in Michigan.” Why? Because she is outraged that she won’t be able to retire at age 47 instead of 60, and earn $60,000 a year….for doing nothing. Furthermore, that figure “would increase 3 percent a year, and she would get health benefits when she retired at age 60”. In addition, she would get a three percent annual increase in her retirement package each year. With the miracle of compound interest, she will be receiving the princely sum of $133,277.34 by age 80. We think our math is correct, but you can easily check on it. Currently, English teachers……you know…. the ones who are supposed to teach our kids to read and write, earn between $70,000 and $80,000 a year depending upon their level of education, with 3% pay increases each year. These same people have claimed for decades they are overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated. I don’t know how everyone feels, but eventually, earning ninety thousand dollars a year for nine months of work seems like darn good pay. For years we’ve been told the reason Not Now, Nor has it Ever Been, “For the Children” EXPIRES May 31, 2022
