I can't wait to bet on the big game; that's the real reason most of us love the NFL. We love betting on the games. But I can wait a week longer, or two, or three. We can play the Super Bowl in March. Because there's something much more important at stake here... The health of America. The survival of America. Life and death. The COVID-19 vaccine mandate is ripping this country apart. We need to kill the vaccine mandate today. We don't have time to spare. It's time for bold measures. "Congress hasn’t passed the Build Back Better agenda – yet," she said in a speech before the Community College National Legislative Summit in Washington. "And free community college is no longer a part of that package." The first lady, who teaches English and writing at Northern Virginia Community College, said she was "disappointed." "But Joe has also had to make compromises," she said. President Joe Biden initially asked Congress for $109 billion in taxpayer money to pay for two years of community college for all American students, including people brought to the U.S. as children by migrant parents. Walter Bumphus, president and CEO of American Association of Community Colleges, said community colleges are engines for economic development. “Of course, we share in Dr. Biden’s disappointment that the Build Back Better Act will not specify funding for College Promise programs,” he said. “Despite that there is profound recognition of the benefits of investing the nation’s community colleges and the nearly 12 million students they serve. Community colleges are an engine for economic development and a wise investment at the local and federal level. There is a great deal of recognition by the federal government and support for systems, programs and services that help to eliminate barriers to completion for community college students. Cont. from pg 1 Florida Takes Additional Legal Action Against Illegal Immigration Celebrating 100 Years The Sun Bay Paper Page 6 The state of Florida is taking additional legal action against the Biden administration over its immigration policies after Attorney General Ashley Moody’s recent trip to the Texas-Mexico border. Moody filed an amended complaint Wednesday challenging a Biden administration policy called “Parole + Alternatives to Detention,” which guides U.S. Immigration and Customs and Enforcement officials to release illegal immigrants into the U.S. instead of beginning the legal process for their removal. The legal action is in addition to the lawsuit Florida filed last September over the administration’s catch-and-release program. The Obama-era policy, whereby federal agents release illegal immigrants into the U.S. instead of detaining them according to federal law, was halted by the Trump administration. Under the Trump administration, those entering the U.S. illegally, including those claiming asylum, were detained or were required to wait in Mexico under the Remain in Mexico program while their case was considered before an immigration court to determine if they had a valid reason to enter the U.S. This policy was halted by the Biden administration and the catchand-release and Parole + Alternatives policies were implemented. While the Supreme Court ruled that the Biden administration had to reinstate the Remain in Mexico policy, after Texas and Missouri attorneys general sued, they still had to keep taking the administration to court to comply with the court order. While the administration claims that it has reinstated the Remain in Mexico program, continuing to release individuals into the U.S. indicates that it hasn’t, the AGs argue. The lawsuit also comes after Florida joined eight states in suing the Biden administration last week over its Central American Minors program, another Obama-era policy halted by the Trump administration and reinstated by Biden. After a Florida father was murdered by an illegal immigrant last fall, Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed to look into every avenue possible to stop the Biden administration from violating immigration law and bringing illegal immigrants to Florida. He and Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry called out the Biden administration after they learned that illegal immigrants were being flown into Florida in the middle of the night without the state’s knowledge on flights that were reportedly facilitated and or funded by the federal government. “The Biden administration has not only consciously refused to enforce immigration laws, but it has also developed an operation to secretly resettle illegal aliens into communities across Florida and the rest of the United States,” DeSantis said. “They’re doing this in the dark of night without any coordination with states, without any background checks, and without any efforts to initiate the legal process for their removal.” Suing the Biden administration is one way Florida “is continuing our fight to hold the Biden Administration accountable for its reckless disregard for immigration laws,” he said after the latest legal action was filed. At a recent border summit near McAllen, Texas, hosted by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, Moody said the AGs have learned that the Biden administration was “building a massive clandestine smuggling operation, outside the confines of law across our nation.” She said, “When I took office, I never dreamed I’d be fighting against my own government to help me in my job as attorney general to protect my citizens.” “When we started this year, we immediately had to start fighting [the Biden administration] in court because it wasn’t following the law. They were releasing those here illegally that were committing crimes in our states in violation of federal law, or they were cancelling operations that were going after those here illegally that were sexual predators, sexual offenders,” she said. President Joe Biden has yet to visit the southern border. In his first year in office, Border Patrol agents made nearly 2 million enforcement actions against people entering the U.S. illegally, many of whom were released into the U.S. The administration has argued its policies are humane and continues to facilitate the transfer of people into the U.S., including single, young adults. One day after Moody’s announcement, ICE announced it was requesting contract bids to help it establish a Young Adult Case Management Program to aid illegal immigrants ages 18 and 19 “who pose a low flight risk” to “navigate the immigration process and access community services.” The program applies to those who “age out” of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement custody, or are released by Border Patrol or ICE agents, or are currently reporting to ICE's nondetained docket. ICE Acting Director Tae D. Johnson said, “We remain committed to providing for the health and welfare of all noncitizens in our custody, while ensuring they have access to needed resources and support.” The request for proposal (RFP) was posted Jan. 28 “for interested contractors who can establish a program that provides appropriate monitoring services for participating young adults while promoting compliance with immigration obligations and release conditions” as they “await final determination of their immigration cases.” The program will not include GPS or other monitoring technology. Bethany Blankley The Center Square February 11, 2022 - February 17, 2022 In 1949, Howard married the love of his life, Julia Rozanski in Westerly, RI, and they were married for 57 years until Julia’s passing in 2006. They have four children. After retirement from the Navy, He taught basic electronics at the North Chicago Community High School to adults in night classes. He held a general class amateur radio license and a first class commercial radio telephone license with a radar endorsement. Howard was owner/operator of Coastal Electronics in Stonington, CT, a marine electronic repair facility working on various vessels. His work consisted of repair and installation of radar, radio transmitters, automatic pilots, depth indicators, radio control devices, loran, radio direction finders, and master antenna TV systems. . As a new opportunity with the State of Connecticut came along, Coastal Electronics was dissolved. Howard’s next adventure was working for the State of Connecticut, Marine Research Laboratory out of Noank, CT as a Research Assistant. Howard’s work consisted of maintenance and repair of electronic equipment and various laboratory test equipment. He was also responsible for the installation and check out of electronic equipment for continuous seismic profile work and assisting in the development of a sonic tag for tracking and locating under sea life. Howard retired from the State of CT in 1979. Howard has always been a sailing enthusiast and has made countless trips up and down the east coast (from Maine to FL), Dry Tortuga, and also adventured to Bahama, sailing singlehandily. At the age of 88, Howard purchased a travel trailer and has made four trips across the US visiting his children (AL, WA, RI and VA) and seeing the countryside. In addition, he has enjoyed many short trips up and down the east coast. Howard also ventured on a cruise to Alaska and has participated in the “Honor Flight” to Washington, DC. Howard’s family will be celebrating this momentous occasion with him! The Biden administration is advancing immigration policies that are harming children, Gov. Ron DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Living trusts often confuse people unfamiliar with estate planning. Basically, you create a trust and then transfer title to certain property from yourself to the trustee. The confusing part is that you can also serve as the trustee, at least while you are still alive. And as trustee, you can still use or sell the property without restriction. But the critical thing to understand is that while the property remains in trust, you must take any action as the trustee and not as an individual. For instance, let's say you create a living trust and transfer your house into it. If you then decide to sell the house, you need to make sure you sign the deed and any accompanying paperwork as the trustee, e.g., “John Smith, as Trustee of the John Smith Revocable Trust.” Mistake in Deed Leads to Adverse Possession Lawsuit What happens if you make a mistake and sign the deed as an individual? For one thing, the person who thought they know owned the house may need to jump through a number of legal hoops to establish title. This actually came up in a recent case from the Florida Second District Court of Appeal, Batterbee v. Roderick. In this case, a woman (the settlor) who owned a mobile home in Sebring created a trust. She transferred the home and its surrounding property into the trust. Some years later, the settlor invited his son and his then-girlfriend to live in the home. The son later married the girlfriend and they enjoyed “exclusive possession” of the property. In 2009, the settlor signed a quitclaim deed that purportedly transferred the property to her son outright. Unfortunately, the deed did not identify the settlor as the trustee of the trust. This meant the deed was “legally ineffective.” But at the time, nobody had noticed the defect. After the settlor died in 2011, her sister took over as trustee. In 2014, the son and his wife began divorce proceedings. They both claimed the home as a marital asset. This prompted the successor trustee to file a “corrective” deed purportedly transferring the property back into the trust. Despite this action, the divorce court treated the house as the property of the son and his now-former wife and awarded it to her in the final judgment. When the former wife died, her interest in the property passed to one of her brothers. This prompted litigation between this brother and the successor trustee over who actually owned the property. The brother claimed his sister and her ex-husband had established “adverse possession” despite the original defective deed. The Second District agreed. Reversing a trial court's ruling in favor of the trustee, the Second District explained that under Florida law, when someone takes possession of real property under the good faith belief they hold a valid title and maintains “continued possession” for at least seven years, they effectively prove they are the lawful owned under adverse possession. Here, the Second District said the adverse possession began when the settlor signed the original defective deed, which was more than seven years before the litigation began. The current owner therefore established his sister was the rightful owner of the property. This litigation would never have been necessary if the settlor had properly executed the original deed in her capacity as trustee. Dear Doctor: I just read about a study where people who were depressed actually had a different gut microbiome than people who weren’t depressed. Is that true? Does your gut determine how you feel? Dear Reader: The recognition of the link between emotions and the gut is so ancient, it’s been hardwired into our language. There’s the gut feeling, going with your gut, butterflies in your stomach, a sinking feeling, bad news that’s a punch to the gut, having a gut response, or finding something to be nauseating, sickening or gut-wrenching. Now, new research suggests that not only does the brain affect the gut, but that the connection actually goes both ways. Specifically, that the composition of the gut microbiome may play a role in how someone feels. This is a new and sometimes controversial field of research, and it is the subject of (occasionally fractious) debate. The study you refer to may be one published in February in the scientific journal Nature Microbiology, which focused on 1,054 people from Belgium. Of those, 173 were either diagnosed with depression or did poorly on a questionnaire that asks participants to rate their quality of life. When the composition of participants’ microbiomes were analyzed and compared, researchers found an interesting difference. Specifically, people with depression lacked two types of microbes, known as Coprococcus and Dialister, which were present in the guts of those who were free from depression. Data in the Nature study were compared with a study of 1,064 Dutch people in which researchers found that the same two microbes were missing from the guts of those who either reported or were diagnosed with depression. In addition, the two different groups with depression had greater numbers of a certain microbe believed to be involved in Crohn’s disease. This adds weight to the theory that inflammation has a role in mental health. The specific reason that these two missing microbes affect depression is unclear. One promising line of thought, according to the researchers, is that that Coprococcus has been linked to dopamine, a brain chemical that influences feelings of pleasure and satisfaction. The microbe also makes a substance that acts as an anti-inflammatory. Such studies can suggest cause-and-effect relationships, but they shouldn’t be considered “proof” of a connection. They don’t prove them. It’s fascinating that the depressed people in the studies lacked certain microbes in their guts, but more research is needed to show direct causality. The good news is that each new study adds to our understanding and sets the stage for new research to come. The hope is that, over time, this line of inquiry will lead to new therapies such as microbiome profiling or precision bacterial supplements, which will offer new avenues of relief to people living with depression. The Sun Bay Paper Page 8 February 11, 2022 - February 17, 2022 Letters To The Editor Guest Editorial When President Donald Trump, ordered a successful takedown of top Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Democrats and even the anti-Trump media celebrated the death of the terror leader. But top leaders of the Democratic party still chastised Trump for failing to notify top congressional Democrats of the impending strike. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement: "The House must be briefed on this raid, which the Russians but not top congressional leadership were notified of in advance, and on the administration's overall strategy in the region. Our military and allies deserve strong, smart and strategic leadership from Washington." Trump did inform two Republican leaders of the strike, but admitted he completely excluded Democrats, including Pelosi. As to informing Pelosi, Trump said: "No, I didn't. I didn't do that. I wanted to make sure this kept secret. I don't want to have men lost, and women. I don't want to have people lost." He also said: "(I was) going to notify (congressional leaders) last night, but we decided not to do that, because Washington leaks like I've never seen before. Washington is a leaking machine. And I told my people, we will not notify them until our great people are out -- not just in, but out. I don't want to have them greeted with firepower like you wouldn't believe." House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam B. Schiff, D-Calif., called Trump's lack of notice "a mistake." Schiff said, "In terms of notifying the Gang of Eight, that wasn't done," referring to the leaders of both parties in the House, the Senate and their Intelligence Committees. And according to former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Trump also broke protocol by not informing his Presidential predecessor of the elimination of this ISIS leader. Rice said: "There is a tradition of common courtesy of presidents informing their predecessors of things of significance like this. I'm quite confident that they didn't do the normal protocol with respect to predecessors either.".... That was then. Last week President Joe Biden ordered a strike that killed al-Baghdadi's successor, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi. Did Biden, pre-strike, notify top congressional leaders or give former President Donald Trump an advance warning? The same Democrats who criticized Trump said nothing about whether they received notice of the strike. But it appears that Biden, like Trump, kept House intelligence leaders in the dark. The Washington Post wrote: "A House Intelligence committee official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said Thursday that the committee was not notified before the Syria mission 'and will ask for additional information from the administration on that decision.'" What about Pelosi? The Post said: "Gen. Mark A. Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Thursday morning to inform her about the Syria mission, according to Pelosi spokesman Drew Hammill. It is unclear whether Milley's call to Pelosi came before or after the strike." Whether Pelosi received notification before or after the strike, given her criticism of Trump, seems awfully relevant. But Dems and the media appear blase about the difference. Did Biden, like Trump, worry about leaks from congressional intel leaders, including Democrats like Pelosi and Schiff? Who knows? And it appears than neither Democratic intel leaders nor the pro-Biden media care to find out or even to ask. Oh, what a difference a Democratic administration makes. The Sun Bay Paper Page 10 February 11, 2022 - February 17, 2022 Muddling Through *** The concept of “presidential doctrines” has been around a long time, but I recall it being routinely used only since the beginning of the “Bush 43” presidency. The term usually refers to foreign policy and national security. Following are unofficial “Doctrines” from recent presidencies. Charles Krauthammer was the first to endow “doctrine status” on President Bush 43. The Bush Doctrine clearly was a reaction to “9/11.” Bush declared that successfully anticipating threats is essential after which we will act proactively, preemptively, and if necessary, unilaterally in the international security interest of the United States. Here’s the official policy as stated in the National Security Strategy – it required: “defending the United States, the American people and our interests at home and abroad by identifying and destroying the threat before it reaches our borders.” Sending our military into Iraq demonstrated this new attitude toward terrorism. President Obama expressed his preference for avoiding “doctrinaire” approaches to foreign policy and national security. He preferred viewing “our security in terms of a common security and a common prosperity with other peoples and other countries.” His was a very international perspective, with a tendency for restrained and multilateral actions. The term “lead from behind” crept into Obama’s doctrine after an Obama official used the phrase to describe our Libyan policy. Many conservative critics considered it idealistic and naïve to always favor appeasement over preemptive action. Some saw this sense of reluctance to be a sign of uncertainty and indecision. Obama supporters saw this as being prudently cautious while avoiding military confrontation at all costs? A spontaneous comment by Obama during his second term reduced his nuanced foreign policy attitude to just a few words. He was on Air Force One, discussing his approach to foreign policy when he summarized his attitude as: “Don’t do stupid sh**!” Donald Trump’s four action-packed, battle-scarred years reflect the man and his combative, often outrageous, style. Rather than relying on theoretical discussions, he preferred personal instincts and experience regarding human nature, behavior, and motivation. Trump had strong win/lose instincts. Despite that, he was reluctant to get bogged down in extended military engagements. His doctrine probably would include a list of actions: improved border security, illegal immigration, and cross-border drug and human trafficking; energy independence; law and order emphasis; strengthened military; renegotiated trade agreements; potentially transformative Abraham Accords; record low unemployment with healthy wage increases; terminated Paris Accords and the Iran Nuclear Agreement; aggressively engaged China, North Korea and Russia; and substantially wiped-out ISIS. “America first” and “peace through strength” come close to expressing the Trump Doctrine in just a few words. (Note: Trump’s outrageous and combative personality impacted his presidency. However, that discussion, along with his post-presidency election integrity activities, the mainstream media’s war against him, the fraudulent Steele Dossier, and the foolish impeachment trial belong in a separate commentary.) Biden’s foreign policies seem significantly joined with Obama’s. Part of this impression comes from the fact that several of Obama’s international and national security policies that Trump changed, have been, or will be reversed by Biden. These include: Trump’s progress with border security; Trump’s policies for immigration and drug trafficking; Paris Climate Accords; oil production and pipeline policies; and Trump’s cancellation of the Iran nuclear agreement. The stumbling associated with Biden’s China and Russia relationships, chaos at the border, the disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, and our voluntary movement away from energy independence stand out for me as the most negative developments from Biden’s foreign and national security policies. Some words I used 10 years ago to describe Obama’s policies also apply to the direction Biden is taking. Biden’s policies seem to “rely on the opposition doing the right thing for the right reasons.” That’s very “reactive,” not “proactive.” It seems naïve to think that approach is possible in today’s world. It’s opposite in virtually all ways compared with the Bush Doctrine and the Trump Doctrine. But it is consistent with both Obama’s and Biden’s reluctant, “wait-and-see” attitude. *** Finally, I heard a characterization of Biden’s Doctrine during a podcast discussion between Zack Cooper, Melanie Marlowe, and Christopher Preble at warontherocks.com. He arrives in a small town and spots a local hotel and decides to see if it will be a good place for him to stay while his he and his family explore the area for a permanant home. He asks the front desk clerk if he can check out the rooms and see if it is suitable for their needs and places a $100 bill on the reception counter and goes to check out the rooms with the bellhop. As soon as he gets out of sight, the hotel owner/clerk takes the bill and runs off to pay his debt with the hardware store who fronted him supplies for repairs at his hotel. The the hardware store owner takes the note and runs to pay his debt with the local butcher, saying "thanks for hooking me up for my daughter's birthday BBQ, times have been tough Thank you you so much.” The butcher takes the 100 dollars and runs to pay the pig farmer at the end of the road, thanking him for the advanced hogs he has sent in the past, the farmer takes the money and runs off to pay what he owes to Maria, the local lady of the night who he has not paid for a few "visits", ... in times of crisis, she offers him, her services on credit. The “lady”with the bill in hand leaves for the small hotel, where she had taken her clients a few times and hadn’t paid yet, she puts the 100 dollars on the reception desk in front of the hotel owner just before Joe, who just looked at the rooms comes down, says he is not convinced the rooms will suit their needs, takes his 100 dollars and leaves. "Now the whole city lives debt-free with a hundred dollars that no one actually had, they all feel better about themselves and now look to the future with more confidence" !!! MORAL of the story: CASH FLOW IS IMPORTANT.... Money that is circulated in the local economy keeps the local economy functiuoning!!
