Fort Myers Beach has become one of the top Spring Break destinations in the country, and businesses here say it's a big part of their annual revenue.
But now a Parkland school shooting survivor, David Hogg, (one of the regular voices for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students following the mass shooting), has taken to Twitter, last Saturday, urging people not to spring break in Florida until stricter gun laws are passed.
He tweeted. "Let's make a deal DO NOT come to Florida for spring break unless gun legislation is passed. These politions won't listen to us so maybe they'll listen to the billion dollar tourism industry in FL.” The post has been retweeted more than 30,000 times and started the #BoycottFlorida movement.
Here at Sun Bay, we have recently launched our Twitter account and have started a #SupportFloridaTourism movement on Twitter, asking conservatives and liberals to support tourism in our state, in direct opposition to Hogg’s attempt to hurt the everyday worker in Florida... ?
Does Mr. Hogg think the average worker who depends on tourism to feed his/her family deserves to be punished for this shooting, especially since we locals here feel the same sadness for the shootings.
Locally, it would appear this #BoycottFlorida movement will not have much of an effect on Spring Break, it's just too little too late, most hotels are already sold out as spring breakers have pre-made their reservations locally, and other destinations for spring break have been sold out in advance as well.
"Spring Break is obviously a huge month for us," said Melissa Schneider, marketing director for the Lani Kai. She said they are expecting more than 100,000 spring breakers to visit the resort in March.
"We've been celebrating for over 25 years now officially," she said. "They know this is the place to be."
“Everything's been looking good, we've been hearing from a lot of spring breakers," said Schneider. "We're on a waiting list for people to get in here during spring break now and even for the coming months."
Other local businesses cited future concerns over the #BoycottFlorida twitter movement, saying that some people may vacation elsewhere rather than visit our beautiful beaches, but only liberals that will still blame the gun and not the mental state of the shooter would actually consider boycotting.
Maybe it will bring less of them to our state and less of them would see how great a place Florida is and so..... less of them would eventually move here and with the new #SupportFloridaTourism movement that we have just started on twitter, asking conservatives to come vacation here in response to this boycott, maybe more conservatives will move here and improve our demographics.
